Why Registration is Mandatory
You cannot just show up at the base camp and start walking. Registration is mandatory for all pilgrims. The Amarnath Yatra registration process includes both online and offline registration via authorized banks and the official website of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB).
Here is why the system works this way:
Safety: The pilgrimage route passes through extreme high-altitude terrain with unpredictable weather. Registration allows authorities to track every pilgrim’s movement, coordinate rescue operations if needed, and ensure no one is left behind.
Crowd management: Participation in the Amarnath Yatra is limited, with only around 15,000 pilgrims allowed each day. Therefore, it is strongly advised to register early to prevent last-minute rush and to ensure you meet the necessary age and health requirements.
Health screening: The journey to Amarnath involves high altitudes, steep terrain, and cold temperatures. The mandatory health certificate ensures that pilgrims with serious medical conditions are identified before the journey begins — for their own protection.
Accountability: Your registration creates a record that helps the Shrine Board and local administration account for all pilgrims throughout the Yatra.
Who Can Register — Eligibility Criteria
Age: Pilgrims must be between 13 and 75 years of age.
Health:
- Pregnant women (not more than 6 weeks pregnant) can undertake this Yatra, though physical discomfort should be considered.
- People suffering from heart diseases, respiratory ailments must consult a doctor before starting the journey to the Amarnath shrine.
General fitness: The Yatra involves a trek of 14 to 48 km depending on the route chosen. You need to be in reasonable physical health to attempt it safely.
Documents You Need Before You Start
1. Government-issued Photo ID (any one of the following)
- Aadhaar Card
- Voter ID Card
- Passport
- Driving Licence
- PAN Card
2. Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) — Most Important
This is the single most important document for Amarnath Yatra registration and the one that requires the most advance planning.
Pilgrims must obtain a valid Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) from authorised medical institutions. The certificate is mandatory and remains valid for the duration of the officially announced pilgrimage period.
What is a CHC? A Compulsory Health Certificate is a medical fitness certificate issued by an authorised doctor confirming that you are physically fit to undertake the high-altitude Amarnath pilgrimage.
How to get your CHC:
- Visit your doctor (the certificate must come from an authorized medical practitioner recognised by the SASB — not just any doctor)
- Authorised doctors include those at government hospitals, certain designated private hospitals, and empanelled doctors listed by state governments
- The SASB website publishes the list of authorised doctors/hospitals state-wise — check this before your appointment
- The doctor will conduct a basic health examination including blood pressure, heart rate, and assessment of any underlying conditions
- The completed CHC form must be stamped and signed by the authorised doctor
How to upload it: For online registration, you will upload the CHC as a scanned PDF (maximum 1MB).
3. Passport-size Photograph
- Recent photo, JPEG/JPG format
- Maximum size: 1MB
- White background recommended
How to Register Online — Step by Step
Online registration is the easiest, most convenient option for most pilgrims. You can complete the entire process from home without visiting any office.
Official website: jksasb.nic.in
Step 1 — Visit the Official SASB Website
Go to jksasb.nic.in (Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board website).
Important: Only use this official government website. There are many unofficial websites that charge fees for “registration services.” The real registration is completely free. Do not pay anyone to register for you.
Step 2 — Find the Registration Section
Click on the “Online Services” option located in the top menu. Then select the “Yatra Permit Registration” option.
Step 3 — Read the Guidelines
Carefully read the guidelines, including the dos and don’ts. After reviewing, click “I Agree” and proceed by selecting “Register”.
Read this section properly — it contains important rules about age limits, health requirements, and conduct during the Yatra.
Step 4 — Fill in Your Personal Details
Fill out the application form with your personal details, such as your name, the date you plan to go on the Yatra, mobile number, Aadhaar number, and other basic information.
Information you will need to enter:
- Full name (as per ID proof)
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Father’s/husband’s name
- Complete address with PIN code
- Mobile number (active — you will receive OTP here)
- Email address
- Aadhaar number (or other ID number)
- Preferred date of Yatra
- Preferred route (Pahalgam or Baltal — explained in the Routes section below)
- Number of days for the pilgrimage
Step 5 — Upload Your Documents
Upload a recent passport-size photo and a scanned copy of the Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) from a certified doctor.
Upload specifications:
- Passport photo: JPG/JPEG format, maximum 1MB
- CHC certificate: PDF format, maximum 1MB
Make sure your scanned documents are clear and legible before uploading. Blurry uploads are a common cause of registration delays.
Step 6 — Verify Your Mobile Number
Verify your mobile number through the OTP sent to you.
You will receive a One Time Password (OTP) on the mobile number you registered with. Enter this to verify your identity and proceed.
Step 7 — Review and Submit
Submit the form. Please recheck all details before submission. It will take 4 hours to 24 hours in processing.
Before hitting Submit, double-check: All spellings match your ID proof exactly
Your preferred date and route are correctly selected
Your mobile number is correct (you need this for all future communication)
Both documents are successfully uploaded
Step 8 — Download Your Yatra Permit
Once your application is processed and approved (within 4 to 24 hours), you will receive a confirmation message on your registered mobile number.
Log back into the SASB portal to download your Yatra Permit — a document with a unique registration number and QR code. Print this and carry it with you throughout the pilgrimage.
What to bring at the base camp:
- Printed Yatra Permit
- Original ID proof (the same one used during registration)
- Original CHC Medical Certificate
- Your RFID wristband (collected from the base camp)
Group Registration — For Families and Large Groups
If you are travelling with your family, friends, or a large group, there is a group registration option that simplifies the process.
Amarnath group registration is a convenient option for families, friends, or large groups (more than 5 persons) planning to undertake the sacred pilgrimage together. This type of registration simplifies the process by allowing the entire group (up to 30 persons) to register under one application. One Application for All Pilgrims — instead of each pilgrim registering individually, a group leader can submit a single application form for the entire group. Every member of the group will be issued an individual Yatra Permit, which is mandatory to participate in the pilgrimage.
Documents needed for group registration:
- Valid ID proof for every member of the group
- Individual CHC Medical Certificate for every member
- Passport-size photo for every member
Download the group registration form from the official SASB website and submit it with all required documents.
Offline Registration — If You Prefer Not to Register Online
Not everyone is comfortable with online processes, and the offline option is equally valid.
The state government has set up multiple offline registration centers for the Amarnath Yatra. Vaishnavi Dham, Panchayat Bhawan, and Mahajan Hall are key locations where pilgrims can collect token slips. Tokens are issued three days prior to the Yatra start date chosen by the visitor.
Step-by-step for offline registration:
- Visit an authorised bank branch (Yes Bank, PNB, ICICI, J&K Bank, and others listed on the SASB website) or a designated registration centre
- Collect your token slip from Vaishnavi Dham, Panchayat Bhawan, or Mahajan Hall, three days before your desired Yatra date
- Visit Saraswati Dham the following day to complete your medical check-up and registration
- Collect your RFID cards in Jammu to finalise the registration process
Carry with you for offline registration:
- Original and photocopies of government-issued ID
- Original CHC Medical Certificate (and photocopy)
- Passport-size photographs (carry 3 to 4 extra copies)
The Two Routes — Pahalgam and Baltal
Once registered, you will have chosen one of two routes to the cave. Here is what each involves:
Route 1 — Pahalgam Route (Traditional Path)
Base camp: Pahalgam
Total distance: 48 km (one way)
Duration: 3 to 5 days (typically)
Difficulty: Moderate
Enroute the cave from Pahalgam, you will come across various halting points such as Chandanwari, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni. Ensure that you take enough rest and keep yourself hydrated.
This is the traditional, longer route preferred by devout pilgrims who want to experience the full spiritual journey. The route is dotted with mythological significance — the same path Lord Shiva is said to have walked when reciting the story of immortality to Parvati.
Day-by-day breakdown:
| Day | Route | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Pahalgam to Chandanwari | 16 km |
| Day 2 | Chandanwari to Sheshnag | 12 km |
| Day 3 | Sheshnag to Panchtarni | 11 km |
| Day 4 | Panchtarni to Amarnath Cave | 6 km |
| Day 5 | Return journey |
Route 2 — Baltal Route (Short Route)
Base camp: Baltal Total distance: 14 to 16 km (one way) Duration: 1 to 2 days Difficulty: Steep but quick
Distance — 15 km | Route — Baltal → Domali → Barari → Sangam → Amarnath Cave
The Baltal route is shorter but steeper. Many pilgrims who want to complete the darshan in a shorter time choose this route — you can reach the cave and return to base camp in a single day if you start early.
Best for: Physically fit pilgrims with limited time, younger trekkers, those who want to return quickly.
Physical Preparation
4-week preparation plan:
Week 1–2: Walk 3 to 4 km daily. Flat terrain is fine to start.
Week 3: Increase to 5 to 6 km daily. Add some elevation — stairs, hills.
Week 4: Walk 7 to 8 km with a light backpack (2 to 3 kg) to simulate trek conditions.
Additionally:
- Begin pranayam (breathing exercises) to improve lung capacity
- Stay well hydrated — this prepares your body for the altitude demands
- Get adequate sleep in the weeks before the Yatra

- Thermal innerwear (top and bottom)
- Heavy fleece jacket
- Waterproof outer jacket
- Warm cap and gloves
