Aipan art of Kumaon in Uttarakhand becomes especially prominent during festivals, particularly Diwali. In this traditional art form, artists create symbolic designs like the sun, moon, serpent, conch (शंख), flowers, and geometric patterns. These motifs carry deep spiritual meanings and help invite positive energy, seek blessings, and ward off evil spirits. Most designs take inspiration from local traditions, religious beliefs, and daily Himalayan life.
During Diwali, women create Lakshmi’s footsteps across courtyards, entrances, floors, and rooms to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. They use biswar (rice paste) and draw the footprints from the entrance to the पूजा room, symbolizing prosperity. They add lotus or floral patterns and create these designs on a red ochre base with white detailing.
In the पूजा room, families prepare a Lakshmi चौकी (altar), place the idol of Goddess Lakshmi, and decorate it with fabrics, sugarcane, and Aipan motifs. They also create sacred footprints on plates or paper to invite prosperity and protection.
